Explaining 360-Degree Evaluations To Entrepreneurs With Examples

A relatively new form of performance evaluation, 360 evaluations are being used more often by entrepreneurs. Read on for why, and how to use them.

Employees aren't just the responsibility of their direct supervisors anymore; more and more entrepreneurs and small business owners are looking for unique ways to review a staff member's performance accurately, honestly and effectively. 360 evaluations, also known as 360-degree evaluations or 360 performance evaluations, offer up one answer to this complex problem. In a nutshell, all of the people surrounding the employee in their day-to-day work comment and suggest improvements in a 360 evaluation, and then the supervisor compiles the information and sits down with the employee to discuss the information retrieved.

What follows are two sample evaluation forms for entrepreneurs to use and cater to their specific needs after deciding the 360 evaluation process is the right one for them; the first is for the employee to self-evaluate, and the second is for the employee's peers to use.

No more than one page is needed for this employee self evaluation form, as the staff member will be jotting down notes as they go along and bringing them to the actual review on their own. Just make sure to make a copy of the original before handing it to the employee so that everyone at the performance evaluation is on the same page.

Being the 360 evaluation form with the kind of information that will identify the form's contents from all of the other employees, such as the employee's name, employee number, department, position, start date with the company and/or department, and what time frame the employee is being evaluated for.

Ask the employee to review some questions for discussion before coming to the performance evaluation meeting with their supervisor. Some wording that could be used for this section: "To get ready for the performance appraisal on ____________, please think about the following questions and write notes for future reference. Please remember to bring this form along on the day of the performance evaluation."

Then, list some objectives that the employee was supposed to meet during the time frame they are being evaluated for. Put a box next to each one with the question, "Achieved?" for the employee to decide, along with some space for individual comments.

Next, have the employee fill in the following self evaluation questions:

  • Are the goals from the previous 360 evaluation and/or job description appropriate for this position? Why or why not?
  • Discuss the strengths brought to this position.
  • Where is there room for improvement?
  • Is additional training needed? If so, what kind, and why?
  • Are there any short-term job objectives to share? Long term? How will they be achieved?
  • If there were company policies to be changed, what would be the first three?
  • Are there any other aspects of the job or the company that require discussing?

Feedback for any given employee can be garnered from coworkers, supervisors, subordinates, even clients. Here is a sample layout with instructions for such an evaluation form.

Create the same header for this peer evaluation form as the one in the 360 evaluation form, but add one line that says, "All responses will be grouped together in a single report for anonymity."

Ask the coworker of the person being evaluated to rate the employee on a scale of one to five, where one is poor performance, and five is excellent on the following items:

  • Responds appropriately with and to coworkers
  • Demonstrates high-quality and prompt customer service skills
  • Aware and conscientious of deadlines
  • Stays in regular contact regarding job duties and responsibilities
  • Communicates effectively
  • Offers feedback that is constructive, timely and appropriate
  • Shows ability to change and be flexible with the demands of the job

This section of the peer evaluation form is where the coworker can write feedback and explain a bit more thoroughly any shared experiences. Some language that could be used: "If any of the above points received a one or two rating, please explain in detail why, along with whether or not the employee has been spoken to directly regarding these issues. Also, please suggest any improvements that can be made."

Ask the coworker reviewing the employee to fill in the following sentences:

  • [name]'s contributions of ____________, _____________ and ________ are essential/important to this department because...
  • [name] might work more effectively with other coworkers if they...

Then thank the employee for filling out the peer evaluation form and invite them to add any other comments.
