Sample Interview Questions to Determine Judgement & Decision Skills

A list of sample behavioral interview questions for managers and entrepreneurs, focusing on a job applicant's analysis and judgement abilities.

It can be a bit of a challenge to find, create or write your own job interview questions. Therefore, this list of sample job interview questions should get your creative juices flowing in the right direction. Feel free to use these questions in your behavioral job interviews, or adapt them for your individual entrepreneurial needs.

Sample Job Interview Questions To Determine a Job Candidate's Judgement or Decision Making Skills

  1. Tell me about the most challenging business decision you've ever had to make. How did you manage to come to a decision? Describe the process and the outcome.
  2. It isn't always possible to make a decision leisurely. Describe a time when you had a short period to make a crucial decision and how you made it.
  3. I'd like to hear about a complex decision you've made recently. What were the key elements? How did you determine the key elements? What happened in the end?
  4. Tell me about a situation where the outcomes were unclear, ambiguous or contradictory. How did you make a decision based on these factors? Were any alternatives considered, and if so, what were they? How did things work out?
  5. We all make some decisions more quickly than others. Discuss with me the types of decisions you make quickly as well as the ones that require more time on your part. Be specific and include examples.
  6. Not all decisions end positively. Tell me about a time where you made the wrong decision. Since hindsight is 20/20, what would you have done differently now, knowing the consequences?
  7. Many people made decisions based on fact, reason, emotion of a some combination of all three. Which do you use most often, and why? Give me a specific situation to demonstrate.
  8. Have you ever had to make an unpopular decision? Tell me about it.
  9. We've all had to made a decision when 100% of the facts aren't in. Tell me about a time when you were in such a situation. What did you do? Were you able to get the necessary information to make an informed decision? Why or why not? How did you make the decision in the end?
  10. Tell me about a time when someone else's mistakes negatively affected your performance. What did you do? How was the situation resolved, if at all?
  11. Discuss a time when you used a non-logical approach to solve a problem.
  12. For managers: Do you include your staff members in your decision making processes? If so, when, how often and why?
