When you are looking to hire a new employee, there are usually a lot more things to worry about than what your behavioral interview questions might be -- and for good reason, considering all of the information that needs to be weighed in order to make a decision.
These questions are intended to get your creative juices flowing with regards to behavioral interview questions, specifically in the realm of communication. Feel free to use these free interview questions in your behavioral job interviews, or adapt them for your own needs.
Sample Job Interview Questions to Determine a Job Candidate's Communication Skills
- Tell me about a time when you had to deal with an upset customer. How did you handle the situation? What did you say?
- When do you feel written communications are preferable to verbal ones? Why?
- Describe a situation where you used your skills of persuasion to convince someone to see things from your perspective.
- Tell me about a time when you used your communication skills - be they verbal or non-verbal - to get an important point across.
- Discuss with me a time when you were able to communicate well with someone who didn't like you (or vice versa).
- Have you ever needed to 'sell' your point to a group a people, perhaps in a meeting or presentation? Tell me about it. What specifically did you say or do? Were you successful?
- Give me an example of a time when your active listening skills were put to good use.
- What has been your experience with writing speeches, giving presentations, selling to an audience, presenting reports, giving a talk, teaching or training. Tell me about your biggest success in this area of your professional life.
- What do you do to ensure that someone you are communicating with understands what you are trying to get across?
- Give me an example of a time when you had to present complex information. What did you do? How did the recipients respond?
- Tell me about the last work-related report you wrote, and what it was used for.
- Have you ever written the minutes for a meeting before? Tell me about how you were able to clearly distill everyone's opinion, and how the members of the meeting felt about your version of events.
- How do you avoid communication mishaps in your work life? Tell me about a time when you miscommunicated with someone, and what you did to fix the problem.
