Behavioral Questions To Determine a Job Candidate's Assertiveness

Assertiveness can be tricky for a hiring manager. How do you ask a job candidate - without stepping on one's toes or asking illegal interview questions - if they are assertive? And how can you be sure if the information they provide in the job interview will assist in your decision making abilities?

This list of sample job interview questions for behavioral interviews should get your creative juices flowing in the right direction. Feel free to use these questions word for word in your behavioral interviews, or adapt them for your individual entrepreneurial needs. Sample Job Interview Questions To Determine Job Candidate Assertiveness

  1. Have you ever been in a situation where you didn't do something that you felt should be done? Why didn't you do it, and what happened as a result?
  2. Tell me about a time when you had to provide a supervisor or manager about information they wouldn't be happy with or about. What did you do, and how did they respond?
  3. Describe a situation where you had to be assertive on someone else's behalf.
  4. Sometimes our self-confidence gets in the way of getting a job done. Tell me about a time where your own self-confidence allowed you to succeed where others failed. What was the outcome?
  5. Have you ever felt like a "fish out of water"? What did you do, if anything, to increase your comfort level?
  6. Tell me about a time where you've received poor service or an item that didn't work as it was advertised. Did you do anything about it? Either way, how did the situation resolve itself?
  7. Sometimes the customer isn't always right. If you've had a client who was acting unreasonably with you, tell me about how you dealt with the situation.
  8. Describe a work-related situation that provided you an opportunity to review or question an ethical issue. What happened? What brought you to question it? Were you able to resolve the situation?
  9. It can be a challenge to get along with all of your colleages all of the time. Can you tell me about a time when you and a coworker clashed or didn't see eye to eye on an important issue? What did you do? How did you resolve the situation?
  10. Tell me about a time when someone reacted to you poorly or negatively in a work-related situation. Give a specific example. How did you respond?
  11. For managers: Have you ever had to reprimand someone who didn't agree with your assessment? Discuss what you did.
